About Stephen M Redpath

From a very young age, I developed a deep and abiding love of the natural world and this has subsequently dictated the course of my life. Initially, I had a scientific career studying birds and landscape at The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and later at Aberdeen University. Then in 2019, illness forced me into early retirement and I have been painting full time ever since. My son and I built a small studio in the garden and I spend my time there or out sketching and walking.

In 2020 I was fortunate to be able to be a part of the Bridge House Art Portfolio Course in Ullapool which challenged me and helped me grow. I have had 3 solo exhibitions at Tolquhon Gallery (2019), Gallery Heinzel (2021), Clashnettie Arts Centre (2023) and another one coming up in 2024 at Resipole Studios. I’ve also had work shown at the RSW annual exhibition 2023 in Edinburgh.

My whole approach to painting changed one day in 2019. I had been focused on small, tight, controlled watercolours, which left me cold. Then one day I got a big piece of paper and filled a large brush with Prussian Blue. I rapidly drew the brush across the paper, stood back and was subsequently overcome by emotion. That one event freed me up and gave me endless possibilities which I will be exploring for the rest of my life.
