Thanks for visiting my website. I plan to update this site each month – including new paintings and moving others to the archive page. This site will showcase the paintings that are most important to me, whilst my Instagram account smrpaintings documents ideas, sketches, experiments and hopefully progress.
If you want to be kept updated, sign up for the newsletter and you will get one brief email a month highlighting new paintings before they appear on the website and news of exhibitions etc.
I also plan to post the occasional blog here that will explore aspects of landscape painting.
I will start very briefly, by reflecting on something that the art curator Julian Spalding said to me after viewing my paintings: “Use landscapes as a springboard for your feelings”. This seems to me to elegantly capture the essence of what I’ve been trying to do. Partly I am attempting to capture and highlight those aspects of a landscape that move me, but I also want the paintings to reflect my emotional response to the experience of being in that place. I think these two aspects are best expressed in the painting “The Road to Ullapool”. A beautiful spring day with snow on the mountains and blue sky. Also the sense of elation from being in the place at that time. The painting was in my head as I travelled home and I quickly tried to capture it. For me the process was incredibly stimulating and gave me a glimpse of where I want my paintings to go.
